Square energy is helpful if you’re feeling anxious or need to set boundaries.
In my work with clients, the metaphor of the Square appears often.
You might assume that in today’s hyper-linear, fast-paced world, square energy—symbolizing structure and stability—would be second nature to most of us. But it’s not.
Many of my workshop participants confess that they “hate” squares. They prefer circles or spirals, associating squares with rigidity, masculinity, or even a lack of spirituality. When squares arise in their imagery, they try to soften the edges or transform them into something more fluid.
Yet, for creative and visionary individuals, the square is indispensable.
The square symbolizes strength, stability, and the ability to hold firm boundaries. It’s sturdy, protective, and unwavering—allowing us to stand strong against external chaos, inner struggles, or the pressures of others’ opinions. Unlike more fluid shapes, the square doesn’t tip or wobble when pushed.
Square energy becomes especially important in times of anxiety, overwhelm, or difficulty setting boundaries. It’s the foundation we need to say no, establish safety, and focus on building or creating something meaningful. It’s also a key image for addressing addictive tendencies, helping us regain a sense of groundedness and control.
In a world rife with fear—fueled by crises like climate change, extremism, and authoritarianism—we need the sturdy, anchoring energy of the square more than ever. It’s not a limitation; it’s the structure that allows us to thrive.
An image that brings square energy could be a building, house, box, table, or doorframe.
TRY THIS…
On a piece of paper, slowly draw an image of a square in a conscious and meditative way. Intuit whether you feel like drawing a small square or a large square (size is also a metaphoric quality that will give you potent information about what your inner self wants right now.)
As you draw this square, do you feel its clarity, definition, and focus? When you work square energy in your life, you get this same clarity and definition.
To strengthen its power, institute things into your day that are clear and defined. You might create a schedule, plan your meals, set a timer for how long you are going to do a particular task, and so on.
And remember… you are not “inside” the square. You ARE the square. There’s a big difference.
P.S. Now I’ll tell you something shocking. Trump doesn’t have ANY square energy—he has no sense of self. Putin, same. That’s why they act out. They don’t have a sturdy sense of themselves. When we have a sturdy sense of ourselves, there is no need to act out.
